(BANGOR, Maine) The UNB Varsity Reds women’s cross country team opened the 2016 season, on Saturday, in Bangor, Maine, at the Husson Harrier Invitational.
The team sent six athletes to the first competition of the year, which builds towards this year’s AUS Championship, being held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, on October 29th.
Leading the way for UNB was third year Varsity Red Cailie McGuire.
Her victory over the 4.67km course, in 19:39.4s, was her first as a Varsity Red.
After taking a year off from varsity competition, second year runner Rachel Bennett finished fourth overall, in a time of 21:16.4s. Also finishing in the top ten was first year Emma Towers, in a time of 21:44.1s.
First year Jana Giles was 12th, in 22:10.5s, just ahead of fellow rookie Danielle Lauther, who finished in 15th, with a time of 23:08.8s. Christina Hubbard finished in 20th overall in 23:59.4s.
UNB finished second overall in the team competition with 41pts. St. Joseph’s won the team competition with 37 points, while hosts Husson were third with 52.
