(FREDERICTON, NB) The Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1 in the Atlantic University Sport opener for both sides.

Moncton won 25-20, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-23.

It was a closely contested affair.

Pascal Doiron(Caraquet, NB) led les Aigles Bleues with a game-high 26 digs and 9 kills.

Kelsey Bond(Bridgewater, NS) had 20 digs for UNB, while Megan Kuciak(Ottawa, ON) and first-year hitter Kieren Hume(Truro, NS) had 12 kills each.

"We're not happy," said second year Varsity Reds hitter Kristen Burns. "We know we can do better next time, and show how much work we've done and how strong we are."

Burns feels, despite the outcome, there were positives in the match.

"All the sets were close and we know the mistakes we made, and we know what we have to improve on now," she said.

Moncton's Bailey Lemieux(Fredericton, NB) had 11 kills and was named the Subway Player of the Match.

"It feels awesome, especially because this is my hometown," said Lemieux, of the win. "We worked together. When we were down, we had a tendency not to go out of our bubble. We went to each other for help."

The Varsity Reds host Acadia next Saturday.

Moncton visits Memorial on Friday.
