McGill Team Challenge Recap - Women's Track & Field

On January 24th and 25th the UNB Varsity Reds Track and Field Team travelled to Montreal Quebec to compete in the 19th annual McGill Team Challenge.  This years edition featured eight olympians including the 2012 mens 400m silver medalist Luguelin Santos.  The largest meet in Canada featured 30 university teams from across Canada (10 from OUA, 8 from RSEQ, 6 from AUS, 5 from CW, 1 NCAA).

In the end the women's team finished in 19th place in the team competition scoring 3 points all coming from the teams top finisher Tess McDonald who finished 5th place in the triple jump.  Her best jump was 10.90m and while not a personal best (11.00m) her jumping showed that she is ready to compete at the national level.  Tess currently ranks 17th in the country and 2nd in the AUS.

"We only took nine girls to the meet and with five of them being first years the focus was on competing and learning.  We are still a young team and while we didn't come home with any medals we learned quite a bit.  Our goals still lead to the conference championships at the end of February and national championships after that," said head coach Jason Reindl.

The team will take next weekend off before competing in Oromocto at the 2014 New Brunswick Indoor Championships at the Oromocto base athletics centre on February 8th.
