Swim team led by Losier and Garcelon at AUS Championship
This past weekend 28 UNB swimmers, 18 women and 10 men, participated in the AUS Swimming Championships in Charlottetown, PEI. The top university swimmers from Dalhousie, Memorial, Mt.A., Acadia and UPEI were there and the racing was fierce!

The Varsity Reds men’s team was led by Chris Garcelon. Garcelon won the 50m freestyle and the 50m breaststroke (both under the CIS qualifying standard), bronze in 100 free and fifth in 100 breaststroke. The 50m freestyle win gave him the title of “fastest swimmer of the meet” as the 50m freestyle is the quickest event. There were lots of other “Top 8” performances by the men’s team- six of the eight  men were in the finals and the other two males had several consolation final swims!

The Varsity Reds women’s team was led by Danielle Losier who captured three bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and the 200 Individual Medley. Kaitlyn Young also had an individual bronze medal in the 100m butterfly. The women’s 4x100 freestyle relay- Jessica LeBlanc, Marie-Pier Chasse, Losier, and Juliana Vantellingen- won a silver medal, and the 4x200 free relay – Leblanc, Jordana Stanford, Chasse, and Vantellingen- won a bronze. The 4x100 medley had the second fastest time, but unfortunately was disqualified for an early takeover. Similar to the men’s team, most women were in finals, and those that were not were in the consolation finals!

The Varsity Reds overall had fantastic performances at the Championships. There were numerous life-time-best-times achieved and close to 100% season-best-times. In five of the events UNB swimmers had four or more of the eight positions in finals- a huge breakthrough for the program.

First year swimmers Amanda Greene, Jordana Stanford and Gabrielle Doiron made finals in all of their individual events- quite an accomplishment for first year athletes!

The women’s team placed second overall and the men’s team placed fourth overall.

Next up for UNB swimmers- Danielle Losier and Chris Garcelon will compete at the CIS Championships in Calgary, AB, February 21-23, 2013.
