(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds and visiting Mount Allison Mounties played to a 1-1 draw on Friday evening, the final game of the Atlantic University Sport regular season for both teams.
UNB dominated the first half, putting seven shots on Mounties' keeper Sophie Austin (Kanata, ON). Still, the two sides went to half-time tied 0-0.
"While they had opportunities, we were able to get close enough to them that they weren't able to get good enough shots off," said Mounties midfielder Katherine Ollerhead (Wood Point, NB). "They were contested shots."
The Reds continued to apply pressure as the second half began, finally seeing some results.
In the 53rd minute, Abby Sullivan (Orleans, Mass.) corralled a loose ball just outside of the 18-yard box, turned and fired a shot high over Austin's left shoulder and into the net.
The UNB lead wouldn't last long though.
Morgan Lundin (Ottawa, ON) put a free kick past Reds keeper Rebecca Duda (Shad Bay, NS), in the 60th minute.
The Reds thought they'd taken the lead back a short time later, but officials whistled the play dead on a foul and awarded the Mounties a free kick.
Neither side would get another scoring opportunity.
Graduating UNB fullback Lindsey Lohnes (Bridgewater, NS) was named the Subway Player of the Game.
"We couldn't settle down," said Lohnes. "We weren't feeling pressure, we had nothing to lose, but we weren't connecting, we were taking too many touches and trying to go by ourselves and not as a team."
"Obviously we came here wanting to win, but we're just as happy with the tie," said Ollerhead. "We've improved tremendously over the course of the season, so we're really pleased with that."
UNB finishes the season with a 3-7-2 record, while the Mounties finish 1-9-2.
Both teams will miss the AUS playoffs.
"It's frustrating, as a senior," said Lohnes. "I love my team and they're a great group of girls. I wouldn't change my team for anything, but that's not how I wanted to go out and it's upsetting, but there's nothing we can do."
