(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds women’s hockey team has its first commitment to the defence corps.

Jenna Himer, of Peace River, Alberta, has signed a Letter of Offer, and will join the Varsity Reds when they return to Atlantic University Sport competition in 2018-19.

Himer plays defence for the Red Deer AAA Sutter Fund Chiefs, of the Alberta Female Hockey League, and is attending Notre Dame High School, in Red Deer.

In her second season with the Chiefs, Himer recorded two assists in 24 games.

In 2014-15, she was named the Most Valuable Player for the Peace County Storm, of Alberta’s Bantam AAA league, and earned the Storm’s Most Dedicated Player award in 2013-14.

"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to play at the university level and proud to be a part of the new program at UNB,” said Himer.

“We are very fortunate to have a player like Jenna who will be able to step into our line-up and be an anchor for our defensive group,” said Varsity Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She sees the game at a high level and holds herself to a high standard that allows her to compete shift in and shift out.”

Himer is currently among the final 29 players invited to tryouts for Alberta’s U18 team that will take part in the Canadian championship, in November.

Coach Hilworth expects Himer will be as good for the team off the ice as she will be on it.

“Jenna will provide leadership in the dressing room, and we’ll be looking for her to set the standard of a high-performance athlete within our culture.”

Himer plans to study Kinesiology at UNB.
