(WOODSTOCK, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds may call Fredericton home, but they know their fan base isn’t limited to the provincial capital.

Seven members of the Varsity Reds women’s basketball team, and assistant coach Laura Fowler, recently made a trip to Townsview Middle School, in Woodstock.

Each member of the team visited three classrooms.

They read to students and spoke about their own experience, as student-athletes.

“Going into schools is always an enjoyable experience for our student-athletes,” said Fowler. “The staff and students treat us amazingly well, and we always have such a good time interacting with the students.”

After the classroom visits, the Varsity Reds players and members of the Woodstock High School varsity girls’ basketball team played an intra-squad game for the entire Townsview school population.

“Hopefully we encouraged them to stay active,” said Fowler. “And you never know, maybe there's a future VRed in the crowd.”

In the wake of the visit, a number of Woodstock-area minor basketball teams have reached out to the Varsity Reds about attending a game when the Atlantic University Sport season resumes.

The Varsity Reds are now looking forward to that return visit.

“We made some new friends,” said Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “I’m a big believer in our student-athletes doing these types of things, so it was a great opportunity for us.”
