(HALIFAX, NS) The University of Montreal Carabins defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 3-0 in AUS-RSEQ interlock play, in Halifax, on Friday.
Montreal won in straight sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.
In the first set, after being tied 10-10, Montreal managed to open a small gap to 14-11 before the Varsity Reds pulled within one at the technical time-out.
After that break, the Carabins went up 21-16 on route to a 25-20 first set victory.
The second set saw more of the same back and forth action, with Montreal building a 16-13 lead at the time-out.
They continued their momentum, going up 22-17.
A good service run by UNB's Pascal McCarthy(Fredericton, NB) saw the Varsity Reds pull within two before the Carabins took another 25-20 set.
In the third, the Carabins led 16-9 at the time-out.
Despite a brief UNB run, Montreal won the final set 25-18.
Godefroy Veyron-Trudel(Quebec City, QC) led the way for the Carabins with ten kills and seven digs, while McCarthy had eight kills and four digs for the Varsity Reds and was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Montreal looks to continue their success Saturday against Dalhousie.
UNB takes on Sherbooke at 11:00am on Saturday before meeting Laval at 6:00pm.
