Roy Runs To Varsity Reds

(FREDERICTON, NB) One of the top middle distance runners in New Brunswick will join the UNB Varsity Reds track & field and cross country teams.

Alexi Roy, who captured provincial high school titles over 800 and 1500 metres for Bathurst’s Ecole Secondaire Nepisiguit in June, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the Varsity Reds in the coming season.

“It’ll be a great place to study, and I think being part of the teams will be fun,” said Roy.

In winning the 1500 metres at the NBIAA championships, Roy finished more than 10 seconds ahead of the second place runner.

Roy took second at the 2016 NBIAA cross country championships and ran second in 800-metres at the 2017 Jeux de la Francophonie, in Moncton.

“We’ve been watching him for quite a while,” said Chris Gairns, an assistant coach with both the Varsity Reds track & field and cross country teams. “We’ve seen him improve consistently and know he’ll continue to do so with the Varsity Reds.”

“Alexi is one of the top local recruits this year,” said Varsity Reds head coach Chris Belof. “He’s part of a youthful core that we plan to build around in the coming years for both teams.”

Roy will study Kinesiology at UNB.

He’ll join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2017-18 season.
