(FREDERICTON, NB) Michael Colford is as excited to be joining the UNB Varsity Reds as the Varsity Reds are to have him.
Colford, who won the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association’s varsity boys cross country championship last fall, will join UNB’s cross country and track and field teams this fall.
Colford will graduate from Fredericton High School in June, and plans on studying engineering at UNB.
“I chose UNB because it has a great engineering program,” says Colford. “It also has an excellent student to faculty ratio. I feel I will grow here as an athlete and a student.”
Colford is coming off an incredible season as a member of teams at FHS and the Fredericton Fast Tracks club.
He earned silver medals in the 3000 and 1500 metre events at the 2015 NBIAA track and field championship, along with his cross country gold. He was a member of the 2015 NB Legion track and field team, and he was named Run NB’s Up and Coming Runner of 2015.
“There is a very strong team atmosphere with the Varsity Reds,” says Colford. “I think the positive training and learning environment will suit me well. I’m looking forward to taking my training and learning to the next level.”
“Michael has been one of New Brunswick’s top distance runners, for his age class,” says Varsity Reds track and field coach Jason Reindl. “We are excited to have him on our team and look forward to him starting his post-secondary career at UNB.”
Tim Randall, the head coach of UNB’s cross country team says Colford is a valued addition.
“Michael not only brings fast times and great race results with him, but he brings a huge work ethic.”
“Michael is the perfect package,” added Randall. “He’s a great runner, a strong academic and a very nice young man.”
The Fredericton native is happy to be able to continue his running and education at home.
“The cross country and track programs have been building over the last few years,” says Colford. “I’m eager to be competing for the teams.”
Michael Colford has signed a CIS letter of intent.
He’ll join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2016-17 season.
