(HALIFAX, NS) In a battle to decide first place in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey, the UNB Reds beat the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-2, in overtime.
The Huskies responded mid-way through the second.
On the power-play, Hunter Garlent (Thorold, ON) tipped a shot past goalie Alex Dubeau (Mascouche, QC) to make it a 1-1 game.
The Reds struck back quickly, regaining their lead with another power-play goal.
With just under three minutes remaining in the period, Kris Bennett (Brampton, ON) jumped on a turnover at the Huskies' blue-line and sent it across to Matt Boucher (Los Angeles, Calif.) who put home a one-timer, giving UNB a 2-1 lead.
In the third, the Huskies had several scoring chances, including a shot from Dylan DiPerna (Nobleton, ON) that sat on the goal line before being cleared by the Reds with four minutes to go.
On the face off immediately after, the draw was won back to Nicholas Welsh (Halifax, NS), who made a nice move around a UNB defender and sent a wrist shot into the net to tie the game and send it to overtime.
It took only 30 seconds of three on three to finish the game. Matt Murphy (Woodstock, NB) sent a shot that trickled five-hole to win the game for UNB. Murphy was named Subway Player of the Game for scoring the game-winning goal.
With the win, UNB improves to 6-0, while the Huskies are now 5-1-1.
Next on the schedule, the Huskies travel to UPEI on Friday before visiting UNB on Saturday.
The Reds host Acadia on Friday.
