UNB Opens AUS Championship With Win

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties are off to a 2-0 start at the Subway AUS women’s curling championship, at the Capital Winter Club, in Fredericton.

The Krista Nix rink scored an 8-3 win over UPEI before beating Memorial 7-5.

They lead the women’s standings after two draws.

The host UNB Varsity Reds, meanwhile, are 0-2 after losses to Memorial and UPEI.

The men’s championship is also taking place in Fredericton, and three teams, including the host Varsity Reds are 1-0. Memorial and Dalhousie also won their first games.

Dal scored in all six ends in a 14-0 rout of Acadia, while Jack Smeltzer’s UNB rink scored singles in five different ends, beating Saint Mary’s 5-2.

There are three draws Friday, with competition beginning at 9:30.
