Varsity Reds claim 2015 Subway AUS Curling Banner

(MONTAGUE, PEI) - The 2015 Subway AUS Curling Championships came to a close Sunday with the UNB Varsity Reds claiming the banner at the Montague Curling Club in Montague, P.E.I.

In the men’s final, UNB and skip Josh Barry faced the Saint Mary’s team skipped by Scott Babin.

The Varsity Reds finished the round robin schedule with a perfect 3-0 record to advance directly to the final, while the Huskies won their way into the championship game by virtue of a 9-6 win over the Dalhousie Tigers in Sunday’s semifinal.

In the final, the Varsity Reds led 5-1 after the third end thanks to a four-point end, but the Huskies responded in the fourth with a three-point end followed by a steal in the fifth to even the score at 5-5 at the break.

UNB was held to a single point with the hammer in the sixth, but went on to steal a point in the seventh followed by a steal of two in the eighth to put the contest out of reach and post a final score of 9-5.

Katelyn Kelly, Vice President, UNB Varsity Reds Curling Club, says she is pleased to announce Josh Barry will be representing the UNB Varsity Reds at the 8th CIS/CCA Curling Championships hosted by Wilfred Laurier University March 18-21, 2015.

"The committee,  Josh's team, and the curling community within UNB are all very proud of this notable accomplishment. UNB URec has been stellar in working with our club to support our efforts to represent the university each step of the way. We also look forward to continuing the momentum at nationals by the UNB women's team and Jennifer Armstrong last year."
