(FREDERICTON, NB) Filling Matt Daley’s shoes won’t be easy, but Brent Baker feels he’s found a player more than capable of the job.

The head coach of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s basketball team has received a signed CIS letter of intent from Ignas Slyka, of Mississauga, Ontario.

The versatile 6’5” guard will join the Varsity Reds, beginning in the 2016-17 season.

“We are very fortunate to have Ignas joining us for the upcoming season,” says Baker. “He’s an honour roll student and possesses an extremely high basketball IQ.”

Slyka is currently attending Millbrook School, a college/university prep school in upstate New York.

This past season, Slyka averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game, with Millbrook’s varsity squad.

A member of Ontario’s silver medal-winning team at the 2014 U17 national championship, Slyka was named a first team all-star, and one of the top five prospects to emerge from the tournament.

He’s been described as multi-talented and interchangeable, capable of playing either guard positions.

“He has the versatility to play and defend a number of perimeter positions,” says Baker. “He brings leadership through his work ethic and demonstrated ability to perform at a high level.”
