Varsity Reds Rally Past Dal

(FREDERICTON, NB) Another night, another come-from-behind effort at the Richard J. Currie Center.

But, this time it was the UNB Varsity Reds rallying for the win.

The Reds came from 14 points down to beat the Dalhousie Tigers 86-71.

UNB's win comes one night after giving up a lead to the Tigers.

"Matt Daley was showing more discipline tonight not getting into foul trouble," said Varsity Reds head coach Brent Baker. "He's that key who stirs the drink and makes it happen for us."

Daley had a double-double, knocking down 20 points and adding 10 assists. Daley contributed 7 rebounds too, earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

The win over the rival Tigers was satisfying for Daley. "It's been a frustrating two years with these guys(Tigers). This one is big and will be remembered for a while."

Sven Stammbereger had his own double-double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Dalhousie led at the half, 37-30… after leading by as much as 14 points.

Daley brought the VReds to within single digits before Jesse Kendall, with a clutch three-pointer, tied the game.

UNB was unstoppable in the fourth quarter. Javon Masters scored 15 points and was 5-for-5 from the foul line.

Tigers' coach Rick Plato says his team didn't execute. "We talked about it and prepared for it, we just did not get back in transition. The strength of UNB is their transition game and their penetration."

The Varsity Reds see their next action Friday, on the road, at UPEI. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00PM.
