Coach Baker said going into the weekend they had to focus on “Consistency at the offensive end” and doing so “would be a step in the right direction.” Coach Baker also mentioned that Daniel Quirion would be starting after being out for the game against X with a sore knee.
Without any hint of a sore knee getting in his way, Daniel Quirion went on a streak of eight unanswered points with the tenacity of Aaron O’Brien earning two steals, a rebound and two assists within the first eight points. With the V-Reds dominating both offensively and defensively with rebounds, the first quarter ended withUNB up 19-8.
Into the second quarter, MUN began fighting back; however, quickly ending MUN’s nine point streak, Daniel Quiron put another two points up on the board with Aaron O’Brien gaining possession on a defensive rebound and also the assist. With MUN sinking a couple free throws, and a short jumper, they took the lead 24-23, for the first time in the game, with 4:30 left in the second quarter.
MUN wouldn’t hold the lead for long, with Robert Linton sinking two from behind the arc within a minute of each other, assisted by Matthew Daley and Mackenzie Washburn. The second quarter ended with the score, 35-32 for UNB.
The third and fourth quarters were both very tight, with big points for UNB from William McFee, Aaron O’Brien, Ryan Smith, Daniel Quirion, and Matthew Daley, who also ended the game with seven assists and 90% free throws made.
The V-Reds went on to win the game 77-69. The Men also took MUN 89-79 on Sunday in game two bringing them to fifth in the AUS.
The women’s team played MUN both Saturday and Sunday, with scores 75-60 and 77-56 both in favour of MUN.
