UNB awarded CIS Wrestling Championships

John Richard, Director of Athletics at the University of New Brunswick, is pleased to announce that UNB has been named the host university of the 2014 CIS men’s and women’s wrestling championships.

Richard, currently attending the CIS AGM in Toronto where the good news was announced today, was very pleased with the decision. “We are very fortunate to have an excellent wrestling program at UNB and hosting this prestigious event will allow us to support and showcase that program.”

While the date is still to be determined, either late February or early March (2014), the two day event (Friday and Saturday) along with UNB hosting CIS Men's Soccer Championships in November 2013 will result in the Varsity Reds hosting two CIS National Championships in the 2013-14 season and three in the City of Fredericton as STU host 2014 women’s hockey.

Don Ryan long-time head coach of the UNB wrestling program is very excited to host the CIS championships at the Richard J. Currie Center on the University of New Brunswick campus.

“I’m looking forward to hosting the National championships.  The wrestling community is very experienced in hosting events - most recently the 2013 Junior/Seniors - and we will work to ensure this is a first class event for the athletes and the spectators,” said Ryan.

“I would like to thank John for supporting the wrestling program along with Gansheng Xu, Director of Recreation Services, and Dean Wayne Albert of the Faculty of Kinesiology for their support of the wrestling program and our successful bid,” continued Ryan.
