Joyce Slipp named Honorary Chair of the 2016 ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS Women’s Basketball Final 8.

FREDERICTON, N.B. – John Richard, director of athletics at the University of New Brunswick, is pleased to announce that Joyce Slipp will serve as Honorary Chair of the 2016 ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS Women’s Basketball Final 8.

This year’s championship is hosted by UNB and will take place at the Richard J. Currie Center, UNB Fredericton Campus, from March 17-20, 2016.

“We are very pleased to have Joyce join us as honorary chair of the championship,” said Richard. “Joyce has been involved with our program as a student-athlete and as a coach and she continues to be a huge supporter of basketball at UNB.”

As honorary chair Slipp will be involved in a number of key events such as the CIS All-Canadian Awards Gala, the opening ceremonies, on court presentations throughout the championship, and will help crown the CIS championship winning team at the conclusion of the event.

Slipp played both field hockey and basketball at UNB from 1968-1972 and then again in 1973-1974 and graduated with two degrees, a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Arts.

In 1976 Slipp captained the Canadian women’s basketball team at the Montreal Olympics, married her sweetheart Dick, and started coaching at UNB. Her outstanding coaching career at UNB spanned 13 years in basketball and 14 in field hockey.  She retired from coaching in 2006.  She has been inducted in the Moncton and Fredericton Walls of Fame, the NB Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame and the Olympic Hall of Fame.

"I am extremely honored to be named honorary chair of the 2016 CIS women's basketball Championship. Basketball is still very near and dear to my heart and I am delighted the CIS Championship is coming back to UNB again. I have very fond memories of UNB hosting in 2006 and in 1975 and the excitement around the campus and city at that time. I am confident we will be able to generate that excitement again."

Joyce has been married to Dick for 39 years and they have two children, Tyler and Shanda, and four grandchildren.
