The UNB Reds/Papa John’s Pizza female athlete of the week is Leah Smal, from the women’s swimming team.

Smal earned seven medals at the Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, in Halifax.

She swept the women’s backstroke events, winning gold in the 50, 100 and 200 metre events.

Smal took the silver medal in the women’s 50 metre freestyle, and helped UNB earn silver in the women’s 400 metre freestyle relay, and bronze medals in the 400 metre medley relay and 800 metre freestyle relay.

“Leah was incredible this weekend,” says Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand. “She dominated the backstroke events, all in UNB record times, and she’s closing in on AUS records. I can’t wait to see her race at the U SPORTS Championships.”

Smal had previously qualified for the U SPORTS Championship in four events.

The national championship meet takes place at UBC, February 21-23.
